This exercise is actually about reported speech, not an indirect speech. Indirect speech is a way of saying of asking more politely. Example:
- Where's the bank?
   indirect speech: can you tell me where the bank is?

Reported speech is to report someone's sentences or questions to others.
There should be a tense shift in it.

Direct tense                      Reported tense
- present              becomes      past
- present perfect  becomes      past
- past                   becomes      past perfect
